Who’s the Main Character Here?

Who’s the Main Character Here?

I read something recently that suggested we should see ourselves as the subject in any situation.

At first, it sounded obvious. Of course I am the subject of my own life.

But the more I thought about it, the more I noticed how often I unconsciously make someone—or something—else the main character.

Someone is upset, and suddenly they are the subject, and I am the person who needs to react to them.

Something unexpected happens, and it becomes the subject, and I am reacting to it.

It’s subtle, but there is a profound shift when I turn the tables.

Instead of seeing the other person or circumstance as the main actor and myself as a supporting character, I can remember:

I am the center of my own experience. I am the author of my story.

Other people get to have their experiences. Their words, moods, choices, and reactions are simply being offered to me.

Ground and bring your energy inward.

View what is happening around you from that place.

Then choose if and how you want to respond.

When I see myself as the supporting character in someone else’s drama, I can feel compelled to respond. They react, so I react. Their energy pulls me into its momentum.

But when I remember that I am the author of my own experience, I have another choice.

I can pause. I can observe. I can decide that what has been offered to me doesn’t require a response.

And somehow, that feels less like withdrawing and more like coming home—a return to a place of strength and knowing.

Being the main character isn’t about making everything about ourselves. It’s about remembering that everything we encounter gives us an opportunity to choose.

Maybe there is something here to learn.

Maybe something is being offered for us to embody because it serves our soul.

Maybe it is showing us where we need to create a boundary because it doesn’t.

Maybe we are being invited to serve another from a place of grounding.

Or maybe there is nothing to do at all. We can simply observe, let it move through, and let it go.

We are the center of our experience.

And from that center, we get to choose how we meet the world.

With love and resonance,
