From First Sip to Autopilot
“Why do people like the taste of coffee?”
I overheard a young boy ask his mom this while standing in line at Starbucks. It stopped me in my tracks. I turned to his mom and said, “I want to hear the answer too!” We both laughed, agreeing that it’s an acquired taste.
But it got me thinking—coffee is more than just a flavor. It’s a ritual, a routine. Most adults don’t start off loving the taste. We keep drinking it until we do like it, and then it becomes a part of our daily rhythm.
What a metaphor for life.
How many things do we keep doing not because they bring us joy or nourishment, but simply because they’ve become habit? We embed routines into our lives—some originally chosen consciously, others picked up without much thought—and then let them run on autopilot. Even when they no longer serve us, we cling to the comfort they offer.
Maybe it’s time to pause and ask:
What routines am I holding onto just because they’re familiar?
What “coffee habits” no longer feed my body, mind, or soul?
Once you identify one, here are some ways to let it go:
1. Bring it into awareness.
Name the habit. Write it down. Ask yourself when it began and what purpose it once served. Sometimes, simply seeing it clearly softens its grip.
2. Get curious, not critical.
Approach it with compassion. Habits form for a reason—often to create ease or a sense of control. There’s no shame in holding onto them; just an opportunity to choose again.
3. Experiment with something new.
What could you replace it with that truly nourishes you now? A walk instead of screen time? Silence instead of noise? Herbal tea instead of coffee (just saying)?
4. Create a gentle ritual around release.
Letting go is powerful when it’s intentional. Light a candle, write a goodbye note, or set a small object on your altar as a symbol of release.
5. Invite support.
Change sticks better in community. Tell a friend what you’re shifting. Ask for accountability or simply share your “why.”
We all have our coffee habits—things we’ve grown used to that may not truly serve who we are becoming. But the beautiful thing about awareness is that it opens the door to new choices.
