The Becoming is the Vision
Sometimes we wait for the universe to offer up a grand vision of our best self.
We want to know our purpose. We want to know where our gifts are meant to be shared. We want a glimpse of the future that lights up our imagination and makes us think, Ohhh… THAT’S where I’m going.
And, if we’re being honest, we’d also like a set of step-by-step instructions.
Wouldn’t that be lovely?
But perhaps we’re looking at it all wrong.
Maybe the universe doesn’t give us a grand vision because the journey is the vision.
We tend to imagine our future as a finished picture—something we’re supposed to discover and then work our way toward. But life seems to operate much more like a treasure hunt. We get a clue here. A nudge there. A chance encounter. An unexpected invitation. A new idea that catches our attention.
A puzzle piece at a time.
No picture on the box.
And maybe that’s because there isn’t a finished picture waiting for us.
We are creating it as we go.
Every experience changes us a little. Every person we meet adds something. Every risk we take expands our sense of what’s possible. Every unexpected turn reveals something we couldn’t have seen from where we were standing before.
So the thing we imagine as the destination may actually be the result of all those little moments of becoming.
We don’t become our best selves and then begin living our vision.
We become ourselves through the living of it.
This means that the seemingly small things matter.
The class we decide to take.
The person we happen to meet.
The book that catches our attention.
The idea we can’t quite shake.
The invitation that feels a little outside our comfort zone.
The opportunity that doesn’t make much sense yet—but feels interesting.
These may not look like pieces of some grand master plan.
But they might be the next piece of the puzzle.
And when we follow one, something changes.
We learn something. We grow. We expand our perspective. We discover a new part of ourselves.
And suddenly, from this new vantage point, we can see the next possibility.
And perhaps that’s exactly what we need.
Because if we knew the whole story in advance, we wouldn’t get to experience the unfolding.
We wouldn’t get to be surprised.
We wouldn’t get to discover what we’re capable of.
We wouldn’t get to change our minds, follow a curiosity, take a delightful detour, or become someone slightly different than the person who started the journey.
Maybe the universe isn’t withholding the grand vision from us.
Maybe it’s reminding us that there is no grand vision separate from the journey.
The becoming is the vision.
The learning is the vision.
The growing, exploring, stumbling, beginning again, saying yes, saying no, changing direction, meeting people, following breadcrumbs and discovering what lights us up—that’s the vision.
So perhaps we don’t need to figure out exactly where we’re going.
Perhaps we simply need to stay alert and curious enough to notice what’s being offered right now.
Take the next step.
Pick up the next puzzle piece.
Follow the next little nudge.
Because we may not be moving toward the life we’re meant to live.
We may be creating it with every step.
With love and resonance,
