Free Yourself by letting Love and Hurt Coexist

Free Yourself by Letting Love and Hurt Coexist

Relationships are complicated.
Even with those we care about deeply, we often carry a complex history—old anger, lingering resentment, buried hurt. These emotions can feel hard to reconcile with the love or affection we also hold. And that tension? It can leave us feeling confused or even guilty.

In our quest to make sense of these conflicting emotions, we often cling to old pain, replaying past behaviors to justify how we feel. But ironically, this tight grip on the past keeps us from experiencing what we most long for: peace, clarity, connection… and yes, love.

So, how do we let go of the past and allow ourselves to fully feel what’s real, without becoming stuck in it?
How can we soften into acceptance while still honoring the truth of our experience?

Here are a few truths I’ve been sitting with:

1. Love Doesn’t Require Liking or the Absence of Negative Emotions

We often believe that love should be wrapped in warmth and affection, or that it requires ongoing relationship and closeness. But love—real love—isn’t always about comfort or approval. It’s a frequency, a way of seeing. You can love someone at a soul level, even while feeling hurt, even while needing space.

“I love you” can coexist with “I can’t be close to you right now.”

2. Emotions Are Not the Problem—They’re Messengers

They’re not proof you’re unloving or unspiritual—they’re signals. Your body, heart, and energy are asking you to listen.

Try shifting from, “I feel this because they did that,”  to, “I feel this—what is it showing me about what I need, what I can learn, or what I haven’t healed?”

Emotions become a problem only when we turn them into permanent stories. When we see them as messages, they can become invitations to grow.

3. Letting Go Doesn’t Mean Forgetting or Excusing

Letting go is often misunderstood. It doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened or letting someone off the hook. It means freeing yourself from the energetic and emotional grip of the past.

You can say: “Yes, that happened. It mattered. It shaped me. And now I choose to release its hold on my present.”

This is for your liberation, not theirs.

4. Acceptance Is Empowering, Not Passive

Acceptance is not weakness—it’s clarity. It’s choosing to stop fighting what is. That doesn’t mean you approve of the behavior or want the relationship as it is—it means you see it clearly and respond from truth, not reaction.

Acceptance says, “This is where I am. This is where they are. And I can still choose love, boundaries, healing, or distance… whatever is true for me.”

5. Love Can Be Quiet, Soulful, and Unattached

Not all love is meant to be expressed through closeness. Sometimes love is simply holding someone in your heart, recognizing their soul beneath the personality and choices.

It’s love without needing anything in return. Love that respects your truth as much as theirs.

A Practice to Try

Find a quiet space. Picture the person. Let all the emotions rise—anger, sadness, resentment, tenderness, confusion. Don’t fix or analyze. Just breathe and witness. Then, gently shift your awareness to something deeper—their essence. Beyond the wounds and the roles, can you feel the spark of who they truly are?

Can you send love to that—even if you still need distance from their human expression? That’s where healing lives. That’s where love and truth meet.

Mantra for Loving Detachment

“I honor my feelings and release the past.
I hold love and compassion for their soul and for my own.
I choose peace, not judgement.
I choose presence, not the past.”

Love and hurt can coexist.

You don’t have to wait to feel one before letting go of the other.

You are allowed to feel everything you feel—and still root yourself in love, presence, and freedom.
