Life Lessons from My Garden
As I was gardening today, I realized that everything I need to know about life is right there in that small patch of earth.
Flowers bloom in their own time. Not everything is blossoming at once—there are seasons. Some burst forth in radiant color, while others remain curled in tight buds, waiting. Growth unfolds when the timing and conditions are right.
Weeds? They’re simply whatever doesn’t serve your garden, even if others might admire them. What doesn’t belong in your soil is yours to decide. Some things choke out space, light, or nutrients—and it’s okay to pull them up, gently but firmly.
Too much of any one thing—sun, shade, water, even beauty—can throw off the balance. A thriving garden is full of variety. It’s the contrast, the interplay of differences, that creates harmony.
Each flower is particular, even fussy, about what it needs. Sometimes it’s the difference of a single foot—more light, less wind, a touch of drainage. Life is like that, too. What works for one soul might not be right for another. And that’s not only okay—it’s essential.
Some flowers require careful tending. Others are hardy and independent. Some boldly face the sun; others flourish in dappled shade. The needs are different, but all are valid.
And then, most flowers go dormant for a time—not gone, just quiet. Beneath the surface, roots stretch and deepen. In these seasons of stillness, strength is gathered. Dormancy isn’t failure; it’s part of the bloom.
And of course, there’s the ever-present possibility of snakes—the unknown, the imagined fear that slithers just beyond the edges of what we can see. It might never show up. But still, we tread carefully, heart slightly guarded. Even in beauty, there’s vulnerability. Life reminds us again and again: Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s the willingness to keep tending anyway.
So I’ll keep showing up to my garden—pulling weeds, planting variety, respecting the season I’m in. It’s messy and imperfect and absolutely full of grace.
What season are you in right now? What’s blooming, what’s resting, and what needs to be gently pulled up by the root?
