After the Overwhelm, the Way Appears

After the Overwhelm, the Way Appears

On Friday, the assisted living where my stepmom lives told us she has to move out—now. Early May at the latest.

This came just as I had finished her taxes, am closing on her house next week, and had driven 650 miles to get her to an urgent retinal appointment they said had to happen within five days.

I thought I was coming over the crest of a hill… toward some reprieve.

And then everything shifted.

She burned papers in her room—so now finding her a memory care residence  (her second move in a year) has become an urgent priority.

Oh—and I have a two-week vacation I’ve been planning for over a year, starting in the second half of April.

And yet… I didn’t spiral.

I could feel the sensations in my body and name them:
Overwhelm.
Fear.
The fear of navigating dementia with someone who may be confused, resistant, or unhappy.

Instead of pushing forward in that state, I stopped.

I let go of the planning, the figuring out, the “what now?”

And I asked:
How do I move through this in a way that honors both me and my stepmom?

The answers came quickly. Clearly.

Get an Alzheimer’s coach.
Hire a transition team to handle the move and rehome what won’t fit.

Almost instantly, my body softened. Space returned.

This is the reminder I’m holding onto:

Even when the path takes us through something difficult, there is still a path of least resistance—a path the universe is offering that keeps us supported, centered, and nurtured.

There is still an invitation to pause…
to listen…
to allow guidance to arrive.

And to trust—

You can handle what is here.
These challenges don’t come to stay—they come to clear a path and move out what no longer serves us.
Clarity follows.
Everything is unfolding toward good.
